Up to 40 percent of the food in the United States is never eaten. But at the same time, one in eight Americans struggles to put enough food on the table. Visualising global food waste.
Global food loss and waste amounts to between one-third and one-half of all food produced. In low-income countries, most loss occurs during production, while in developed countries food wastage – above 100 kilograms (240 lb) per person per year – occurs mainly at the consumption stage. In sub-Saharan Africa food waste at the consumption phase is 5kg per consumer.
Recent studies have found that wastage has been serverly underestimted. This visualisation uses the World Bank dataset of individual counties' food wastage figures.
